Dinosaurs

Millions of years ago, long before there were any people, there were dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were one of several kinds of prehistoric reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic Era, the "Age of Reptiles."

The dinosaurs dominated the Earth for over 165 million years, but mysteriously went extinct 65 million years ago. Paleontologists study their fossil remains to learn about the amazing prehistoric world of dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs were land-dwelling reptiles that walked with an erect stance. Their unique hip structure caused their legs to stick out from under their bodies, and not sprawl out from the side (like other reptiles ). When dinosaurs first evolved from more primitive archosaurs, they were bipedal (walked on two legs). Much later, some dinosaur groups returned to a four-legged stance, having hind legs much larger than their front legs .

There were lots of different kinds of dinosaurs that lived at different times. Some were HUGE, some were small. Some walked on two legs, some walked on four . Some were speedy , and some were slow and lumbering . Some were carnivores and some were herbivores . Some were armor-plated, some had thick, bumpy skin, some had horns , some even had primitive feathers.

No one knows what colors or patterns they were, how they sounded, how they behaved, how they mated, or even how to tell whether a fossil came from a male or a female dinosaur.

Dinosaurs suddenly became extinct about 65 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period, which was a time of high volcanic and tectonic activity. There are a lot of theories why the extinction occurred. The most widely accepted theory is that an asteroid impact caused major climactic changes which the dinosaurs couldn't adapt to.

All that's left of the dinosaurs are fossils.

Although dinosaurs' fossils have been known since 1818, the term dinosaur (deinos = terrifying; sauros = lizard) was coined by the English anatomist Sir Richard Owen in 1842. The only three dinosaurs known at the time were Megalosaurus, Iguanodon, and Hylaeosaurus, very large dinosaurs.

Mammoth could 'revive' the next four years

There are chances that the mammoth to see daylight again. A group of Japanese researchers managed to clone cells frozen for 16 years of a mouse, and now scientists want to try cloning the giant mammal.

So far, Japanese specialists from Riken Center for Experimental Biology mammoth mother decided to be a female African elephant, and soon will leave for Siberia to search for frozen mammoth tissue, writes The Telegraph.

In about 20 years ago tried to 'resurrection' mammoth, but without success as specialists samples were frozen too cold. However, hope has been restored by a teacher researchers from Kyoto University, who managed to clone a mouse using cells frozen for 16 years.

"Surrogate Mother mamult future will be a female African elephant, will take about two years as a female elephant is pregnant, followed by another 600 days, as is the period of gestation. The success rate rose to 30% and now I think we have a real chance to clone a mammoth, "said one of the scientists at the Riken Center.

Chupacabra Rampage in Chile

El Chupacabra has been crawling all over Chile in the last few months, raising many new questions about this mysterious creature, and resulting in astonishing claims about its origin.

It stands three to four feet tall, has a flexible row of spines down its back, eyes that glow red and long, sharp fangs... some even say it has wings. This is how eyewitnesses have described the strange, unworldly creature known as El Chupacabra - Spanish for "the goat sucker." The creature, as elusive as Bigfoot and as terrifying as a demon, earned its name from the way it kills its victims (mostly farm animals, including goats) - by sucking the life blood from them.

Chupacabra first made the headlines in 1995, when several attacks were reported in Puerto Rico. The small island still claims the most number of attacks to date, but slaughtered chickens, ducks, goats, cats, dogs and other small animals have been attributed to Chupacabra in Mexico, Central America, South America and even parts of the Southern United States.

During April, May and June of 2000, however, there were reports of a spate of attacks coming out of Chile. The mysterious deaths of farm animals followed the same pattern as those in Puerto Rico and other countries, and descriptions from eyewitnesses who claim to have actually seen the creature in Chile match the hideous features detailed in previous accounts.

The stories that came out of Chile - many reported in Chilean newspapers - had an incredible twist. A few of the dreaded creatures, they said, were actually caught and killed... and then their bodies were taken away by representatives of U.S. government agencies. That was the claim, anyway.

The Attack Begins

The recent attacks began in April, and newspapers carried stories of the mysterious deaths of close to 200 goats, sheep, chickens and rabbits in northern Chile. At first the deaths were blamed on packs of wild dogs, but one trademark feature of the killings turned the suspicion on the legendary Chupacabra. The respected Reuters news agency reported that some of the animal victims "had incisions in their throats and their blood had been sucked out." The report also said that "detectives swept the zone with night vision equipment and that blood-curdling sounds were heard in the dark, causing residents not to venture outside."

Victor Espinosa, an investigator for Chile's Ecology Department, was said to take hair samples and footprint castings for examination. "The paw prints do not match those of horses, cows, goats, pigs, felines or wild dogs," Espinosa said. And, according to Dr. Virgilia Sanches-Ocejo of the Miami UFO Center, Espinosa also said that evidence shows that the animal walks on two legs and only attacks hot-blooded animals and not snakes or lizards of the region.

The Capture

In late May / early June, rumors surfaced that three of the creatures had actually been captured. Reported chiefly by Marcial Campos Maza of the Chile's EFE news service and by Joseph Trainor of UFO Roundup in the U.S. among others, the stories claimed that three of the creatures had been caught in the desert near a mine just north of the town of Calama. In the struggle to capture the Chupacabras, they said, one Chilean soldier had been killed. The Chilean military allegedly would not discuss the matter.

More bizarrely, after the little monsters had been held in an army barracks for several hours, a team of NASA representatives arrived by helicopter from the U.S. (closing the local airport, according to one story) and took them away. How it was assumed that these people were from NASA is unclear, as is where the notion came from that NASA - the U.S. space agency - would have jurisdiction over such a matter, if it were a fact.

"Residents of Calama and nearby communities continued to blame NASA for the apparitions and attacks of the mysterious Chupacabras," Maza reported, "which has killed many farm animals in the region and other parts of Chile... their bodies completely exsanguinated and undevoured by the mysterious predator. It was said that the captured animal was kept all day at the regiment's barracks until NASA experts arrived to take it away."

Why NASA? Some residents believe that the deadly Chupacabras are the result of some diabolical genetic experiments gone awry by NASA, or some other U.S. agency. "The gringos had at least three genetic experiments run away from them," one respected Chilean architect was quoted as saying, but it was not disclosed how he came upon such information.

The Chupacabra Strikes Back

It seemed El Chupacabra was not pleased with having a few of its kind carted away. A new rash of animal killings started to occur in early June. In the backyard of a home in the port city of Talcahuano, 14 chickens were mysteriously slaughtered on June 4 - and Chupacabra was blamed. A few days later, the newspaper Diario El Sur ran a story about another attack in the city of Concepcion:

The strange case took place around 4 a.m. while Julio Reyes and his wife, Carmen Andrade, were still asleep. They suddenly heard a loud noise coming from their home's back yard, a kind of small farm in which they have a henhouse and a garden containing tomato, potato, chocla and pepper plants. "The light outside the henhouse was on. I saw the monster flapping his wings fiercely while the hens were crowing - something they never do at this time. That's when I saw the white one running toward the back. At this time, Bobby [the family's dog] came out to take a look, but when he saw the back gate, through which the hens had fled, he refused to follow and remained standing still. He then ran toward the street gate and began barking," explained Carmen, who did not witness the events herself out of fear that the intruder might be a burglar. "Bobby became sort of dopey and turned back. He didn't dare go forward," Julio said. Around 7 a.m., the couple discovered what had transpired. In the very rear of the backyard - which can only be reached by crossing two gates - their three hens and one rooster were found dead, completely torn to shreds, as if they had been ripped open at the chest cavity and scattered in a 10-meter (33-foot) radius. It is worth noting that the house's entrance is a gate covered with chicken wire."

Chile's national police blamed the attack on wild dogs, but Reyes did not accept that explanation. "Based on several paw prints found on the site," the newspaper article continued, "twice the size of Bobby's, the owner was not satisfied with the explanation, given the difficulty a dog would have had in getting into the area." Also, Reyes said he had previous experiences with dogs attacking his chickens, and they took the chickens away one by one to eat them, they did not slaughter them in this manner.

Two days later, another report was called in to a local radio station. The caller, from the city of Antofagasta, claimed to have actually seen the Chupacabra. He said he was awakened by strange noises his cat was making. When he got up to investigate, the creature saw him and "took off at high speed." He claimed that the Chupacabra had virtually destroyed his car by making deep scratches in it with its claws. And it killed the cat.

Certainly, this is not the last we'll hear of Chupacabra. The attacks might die down in Chile, but the nasty little creature will surface again somewhere else. It might be a good idea to keep all your goats and chickens securely locked up.

Mermaid

A mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish. The male version of a mermaid is called a merman; the gender-neutral collective noun is merfolk.

Origin

Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures. They were known to sing sailors to their deaths, like the Siren, or squeeze the life out of drowning men, while trying to rescue them.

Etymology

The word mermaid is from the Middle English mere, in the obsolete sense 'sea' + maid(en). The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore; in fact in some languages the name sirena is used interchangeably for both creatures.

Mermaids and their kin

Other related types of mythical or legendary creature are water fairies (e.g. various water nymphs) and selkies.

Legend and myth

Tales of mermaids are nearly universal. The first known mermaid stories appeared in Assyria, ca. 1000 BCE. Atargatis, mother of Assyrian queen Semiramis, was a goddess who loved a mortal shepherd and in the process killed him. Ashamed, she jumped into a lake to take the form of a fish, but the waters would not conceal her divine nature. Thereafter, she took the form of a mermaid — human above the waist, fish below — though the earliest representations of Atargatis showed her as being a fish with a human head and legs, similar to the Babylonian Ea. The Greeks recognized Atargatis under the name Derketo, where she was often conflated with Aphrodite.
Lucian of Samosata in Syria (2nd century CE) in De Dea Syria ("Concerning the Syrian Goddess") wrote of the Syrian temples he had visited:
"Among them - Now that is the traditional story among them concerning the temple. But other men swear that Semiramis of Babylonia, whose deeds are many in Asia, also founded this site, and not for Hera Atargatis but for her own Mother, whose name was Derketo"
"I saw the likeness of Derketo in Phoenicia, a strange marvel. It is woman for half its length, but the other half, from thighs to feet, stretched out in a fish's tail. But the image in the Holy City is entirely a woman, and the grounds for their account are not very clear. They consider fishes to be sacred, and they never eat them; and though they eat all other fowls, they do not eat the dove, for she is holy so they believe. And these things are done, they believe, because of Derketo and Semiramis, the first because Derketo has the shape of a fish, and the other because ultimately Semiramis turned into a dove. Well, I may grant that the temple was a work of Semiramis perhaps; but that it belongs to Derketo I do not believe in any way. For among the Egyptians, some people do not eat fish, and that is not done to honor Derketo." [1]
A popular Greek legend has Alexander the Great's sister, Thessalonike, turn into a mermaid after her death Teacher's Guide. She lived, it was said, in the Aegean and when sailors would encountered her, she would ask them only one question: "Is Alexander the king alive?" to which the correct answer would be "He lives and still rules" Any other answer would spur her into a rage, where she transformed into a Gorgon and meant doom for the ship and every sailor onboard.
Among the Neo-Taíno nations of the Caribbean the mermaid is called Aycayía [1] she of the beautiful voice. [2]. Her attributes relate to the goddess Jagua, and the hibiscus flower of the majagua tree Hibiscus tiliaceous [3]. Examples from other cultures are the Mami Wata of West Africa, the Jengu of Cameroon, the Merrow of Ireland and Scotland, the Rusulki of Russia, and the Greek Oceanids, Nereids, and Naiads. One freshwater mermaid-like creature from European folklore is Melusine, who is sometimes depicted with two fish tails, and other times with the lower body of a serpent. It is said in Japan that eating the flesh of a mermaid can grant unaging immortality. In some European legends mermaids are said to grant wishes.
It has been widely suggested that manatees or dugongs could be behind the myth of the mermaid. These large aquatic mammals are notable for the way in which they carry their young, cradled in their arms much as a human would carry a baby. It is possible that sailors seeing these unfamiliar beasts for the first time, would assume that they had in fact stumbled across some sort of humanoid species, and consequently spread their accounts of the sightings through their homelands on their return from voyages. It has even been posited that the traditional image of a mermaid with long flowing hair could be attributed to manatees breaking the ocean surface underneath patches of seaweed, and giving the unfamiliar observer the impression of having long hair. Prior to 546 B.C., the Milesian philosopher Anaximander proposed that mankind had sprung from an aquatic species of animal. For, he thought, man with his extended infancy could not have survived, originally, in the manner he does presently. This idea, based on elemental forces of mutation as opposed to evolution, does not appear to have survived Anaximander's death.

Popular Culture

  • Mermaids are one of the most famous creatures of popular culture, and are depicted regularly in literature and film. This is likely due to the influence of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale The Little Mermaid (1836), which has been translated into many languages and adapted into various media. Andersen's portrayal has arguably become the standard, and has influenced most modern Western depictions of mermaids since it was published.

Lake Murray Monster

Description

The Lake Murray monster was described in The Independent News in 1980 as "a cross between a snake and something prehistoric."

Sightings

The monster [Messie] first 'surfaced' in 1933 when residents of Irmo and Ballentine (the famous Gilbert Little sighting) saw a cousin of the Loch Ness Monster. Sightings have continued almost every year since then.
Buddy Browning, his wife Shirley and their friend Kord Brazell were enjoying themselves fishing on the lake back in one of the coves when the monster charged them. They denied a South Carolina Wildlife Department claim that it could have been an alligator or a large fish, like a sturgeon. (Alligators are not native to the lake.) In a 1990 letter to the South Carolina Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Corder said he and his son have seen something in the waters not once, but twice. "This serpent-like creature is 40-60 feet long with the head and body resembling a snake, with a tail of an eel."
Lake Murray Biologist Lance Harper was in charge of keeping track of incoming reports. "I've talked to ten or twelve people that have seen it. They were reputable, not on drugs or drinking," Harper said. During his 20-plus years working on Lake Murray, Harper said he never saw "the monster" but admits that he did find unexplainable large holes in nets he had set around the lake while studying habitat.
These and many other cases are documented in a booklet about the "Loch Murray Monster." This booklet (3rd edition now available for purchase) contains almost 50 pages of detailed sightings over the years. While it is not unusual to go several years without a sighting of the creature, they do come in periodically. The last documented sighting occurred in September, 2002. Over the years it seems the monster has been spotted in all parts of the lake, during all seasons. You can even see people wearing T-shirts and Hats and other merchandise having the Loch Murray Monster displayed.

Theories

A few experts believe it could be a sturgeon. According to Harper, the 41 mile long and 14 mile wide lake is large enough and deep enough, more than 380 feet, to sustain a supersized creature. "There's alot of bio-mass in the lake as far as being able to maintain something," Harper said. According to Fort Jackson U.S. Army General (retired) Marvin B. Corder, it's home to something far more sinister than a big fish.

10 Deadly Dinosaurs

Some dinosaurs were especially deadly, sporting huge teeth, sharp claws, and (occasionally) even the ability to outwit their prey. Here's a list of the 10 deadliest dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and marine reptiles that ever lived. If you see one of these monsters on the street--run!

1. Tyrannosaurus Rex

tyrannosaurus rexGetty Images

We'll never know if Tyrannosaurus Rex was particularly fiercer or scarier than other, less popular tyrannosaurs like Albertosaurus or Alioramus--or even whether it hunted live prey or feasted on already-dead carcasses. Whatever the case, there's no question that T. Rex was a fully functional killing machine when circumstances demanded, with its five- to eight-ton bulk and huge head studded with numerous, sharp teeth. (You have to admit, though, that its tiny arms lent it a slightly comical appearance.) Read more about Tyrannosaurus Rex

2. Utahraptor

utahraptorAmerican Museum of Natural History

Deinonychus and Velociraptor get all the press, but for sheer killing ability no raptor was more dangerous that Utahraptor, adult specimens of which weighed almost a ton. With Utahraptor, the characteristic, single curved claws of the raptor family attained "Friday the 13th"-worthy sizes, kind of like the difference between a medieval broadsword and a Swiss army knife. Weirdly, this giant-sized raptor lived 50 million years before its more famous descendants, which were considerably smaller (but a lot faster). Read more about Utahraptor

3. Jeholopterus

jeholopterusNobu Tamura

Jeholopterus is a more controversial inclusion than the other reptiles on this list--not because it was a pterosaur rather than a true dinosaur, but because paleontologists disagree about its basic anatomy. The researcher who "diagnosed" Jeholopterus (based on a single, squashed, but near-intact fossil) concluded that this pterosaur had sharp fangs, and speculation ensued that Jeholopterus made its living by sucking the blood of ponderous sauropods like a Jurassic vampire bat. Maybe--but then again, maybe not. Read more about Jeholopterus

4. Kronosaurus

kronosaurusHarvard Museum of Natural History

Any marine reptile named after Kronos--the god of Greek myth who devoured his own children--must have been one bad character. Simply put, Kronosaurus was much, much bigger than a modern Great White Shark, and it had much, much bigger (and scarier) teeth. This plus-sized pliosaur probably ate anything unlucky enough to swim across its path, ranging from fish to squids to other, smaller marine reptiles--and perhaps even the occasional dinosaur that ventured too close to the water's edge. Read more about Kronosaurus

5. Troodon

troodonLondon Natural History Museum

Deadliness isn't simply a matter of size or armament. Troodon weighed only about 150 pounds (about as much as a full-grown human), and it didn't have particularly sharp or scary-looking teeth. What set this theropod apart was its relatively big brain, compared to other carnivorous dinosaurs of the late Cretaceous period, and its presumed ability to hunt in packs at night (the giveaway is its large eyes). The bottom line: four or five alert Troodon might have been equivalent in danger to one full-grown Tyrannosaurus Rex. Read more about Troodon

6. Allosaurus

allosaurusOklahoma Museum of Natural History

It can be, well, dangerous to speculate about how many individuals existed of a given genus, based solely on fossil remains. But if we agree to make that leap, then Allosaurus was a deadlier predator than the (much later) Tyrannosaurus Rex--numerous fossils of this fierce, strong-jawed, three-ton theropod have been found across the western U.S. As deadly as it was, though, Allosaurus wasn't very smart--a group of adults perished at a single quarry in Utah, mired in deep muck as they salivated over already-trapped prey. Read more about Allosaurus

7. Sarcosuchus

sarcosuchusLuis Rey

Better known as the SuperCroc, Sarcosuchus was about twice as long and 10 times as heavy as the largest crocodiles living today--making it the crocodilian equivalent of the marine reptile Kronosaurus, which was 10 times the weight of a modern Great White Shark. In fact, this Cretaceous crocodile may have been deadly enough to lunge suddenly out of a lake or river, snag a full-grown sauropod by its long neck, and drag it kicking and screaming back into the water for a quick lunch. Read more about Sarcosuchus

8. Excalibosaurus

excalibosaurusNobu Tamura

If this ichthyosaur ("fish lizard") sounds vaguely familiar, that's because Excalibosaurus was named after Excalibur, King Arthur's mythical sword. Like a modern-day swordfish--only a lot, lot bigger--Excalibosaurus used its long, pointed, tooth-studded snout to spear prehistoric fish for dinner and keep others of its kind at bay. Weirdly, the top half of Excalibosaurus' jaw protruded a full foot beyond its lower jaw--which might (if they hadn't been so terrified) have prompted some cruel teasing from its fellow marine reptiles. Read more about Excalibosaurus

9. Giganotosaurus

giganotosaurusAlain Beneteau

During the Cretaceous period, the dinosaurs of South America tended to be bigger and fiercer than their counterparts elsewhere on the globe. Exhibit A is Giganotosaurus, an eight-ton, three-fingered, romping, stomping predator whose remains have been found in close proximity to those of slaughtered Argentinosaurus, one of the biggest dinosaurs ever to walk the earth. The inescapable conclusion: Giganotosaurus was one of the few theropods capable of taking down a full-grown titanosaur adult. Read more about Giganotosaurus

10. Majungatholus

majungatholusNobu Tamura

Majungatholus has been dubbed the "cannibal dinosaur" by the press, and even though this may be overstating the case, that doesn't mean this carnivore's reputation is entirely unearned. The discovery of ancient Majungatholus bones bearing ancient Majungatholus tooth marks is a good indication that these one-ton theropods preyed on others of their kind (possibly after they were already dead), though they probably spent most of their time terrifying the smaller, quivering dinosaurs of late Cretaceous Africa. Dragons

Snakes Day
But this popular tradition connects cleansed by fire and snakes, "zernii" (the earth, the waters and those of heaven, dragons master of the shaman), who had to be chased around the house and out of the village. "Zernii sometimes brings out of the ground and put in the ground at Cross Day (September 14), and a bit oamini, do not primne (receives) the earth. And kill him, maybe, "said one elder. "If you do not jump into fire Blagovestenia insamna as shown next year or Zini (will come) zernii how much house. Focu 'is to run zernii. When you can not light up, that's too much snow, or Zini (come) father and summer will be bad year. "
But whatever the weather, in Maramures snakes along through the magical practices, accomplished only by men. Before sunrise, for example, surrounding the house three times, clockwise, with a bright cloth, put on a stick. More rare is the practice of surrounding the house by a man who pulls a chain or by a naked man. "A man-acoale from us, good morning, this day Blagovestenia house surrounded tri (three) times, naked."
Prohibitions
Day March 24 is full of prohibitions designed to strengthen the action of purifying fire. "Up-n Blagovestenia not free to spin out and sit on the stone as your Slabanoagele EUI (Stragele) powers. From Blagovestenia before, you can work anything out: you spin, you can tesi, you slept. "" No bread to cut loose, to cut anything for marhale Blagovestenia day (cattle) walk in the pasture as they eat Wolves, villagers say.
Dragon and Iezerul
Elders say that the snake does not bite humans, animals do not bite that man does not touch and not touch animals and man sees him seven years, it never reaches the human eye, that is dragon. If he sees a man or bird - the smallest bird - and then not doing dragon, snake stays.
The dragon has wings and legs into the lake and many lives and from there out. Ii your bottomless lake, is about the sea. People have verified this. They threw him a pole ten feet long and not meant to ever come out to the surface. They found a large, after who knows how long, and they recognized the signs. Sirens

STORIES THERE mermaids for centuries and is a large part of folklore ABOUT AQUATIC supernatural beings, especially around coastal regions CORNWALL ENGLAND SUCH AS IN SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN ISLANDS. WAS CONSIDERED FOR THE SIRENS bad sign, heralding HOSES great turmoil. There are numerous folk tales describing their interaction with humans.
Mermaids is very similar description of Cornwall to the Outer Hebrides. Their upper torso was a beautiful woman with long hair, and from the waist down, was that of a fish. In many of the classic descriptions mermaids sitting on a rock close to shore, fluttering her hair, singing sweet and admiring their beauty in a mirror you hold in your hand. Their beautiful song lures men much like the sirens, and the unfortunate victims either drowned, or eaten in their world in the depths of the sea. Mermaids Rock is one such place near Lamorna, Cornwall at the eastern end of the site. This was a place haunted by the mermaids singing them fishermen, lured him to death. Sometimes sirens are drawn from the water by some singing. The Mermaid of Zennor in Cornwall, claimed Mathew Trewella because his beautiful voice.
In some tales mermaids are more benevolent, and have the ability to grant magical powers, but is usually a high price to pay. In the story Lutey and the Mermaid (Bottrell, WEST CORNWALL STORIES FROM YOUR TRADITIONAL "), Lutey, a fisherman finds a stranded mermaid on the shore while he was walking on the beach. He helps her get back into the sea and she offers him three wishes. He chooses the power to break spells, the power to compel spirits for the good, and that these gifts would pass to his descendants. She wishes but pulling him close, just before her waving a stiletto (supernatural creatures are usually terrified of iron) leaves him in the embrace. After nine years when he used his powers intaorce siren after he takes him into the depths. Since then every nine years one of his descendants said to have died at sea.
Although most stories describing the sirens to be dependent on large, they are not restricted to the sea and there are several stories about mermaids haunt rivers and deep lakes. Mermaids Pool below Kinder Downfall in Derbyshire is one such location. Siren is here on a specific date and usually has a deceptive nature. Black Mere, near Leek in Staffordshire was also thought to be haunted by a mermaid. It is possible that the term, the siren was used to describe a wider range of aquatic creatures supernatural.
There is belief in creatures half fish, half man thousands of years. The first references to these creatures found in the form Oannes god who was lord of the waters, worshiped at the beginning of civilization in ancient Babylon. There are several other such gods to queue up, but the classic mermaid known in Britain is likely derived from Celtic folklore, folklore and stories of local sea, in places where people were in contact with the sea as part of everyday life .
There have been few actual sightings of mermaids in the last hundred years, even in the 20th century, especially in places where old traditions die hard. In the northern Gulf Sandwood in northern Scotland was long thought that the sirens are being reported as recently as the 19th century, today the area has established a reputation for being merged another phenomenon, perhaps related in some way with the older releases. While these occurrences do not have credibility, may be related to the same mechanism that causes people to see ghosts, black dogs, etc ...

Nessie - The Loch Ness Monster

Nessie was first spotted by the Vikings - Celtic and Norse folklore has stories of water horses seen in the lochs. The first written account of a meeting with Nessie seems to be that of Adamnan in 565 A.D. He describes St. Columba's sighting of a very large monster in Loch Ness.
Legend tells of how St. Columba heard about the monster's murder of a man and how he rowed out to the centre of the loch to order the beast to desist from such attacks in the future. Ever since that time, Nessie has never been known to have repeated its misdemeanour.
The monster was also seen last century but the poor man who sighted the beast was so shocked he did not speak much about the incident. Throughout this century so many people have seen Nessie who seem to have no identifiable gain from telling of their sightings that it seems likely that a great unexplained mystery does exist.

Animals in Mythology: Explore the Mythological Attributes of Animals

Since people first began telling stories, animals have provided ways for them to explain changes in the weather, foretell luck, and propitiate their gods. At the same time that ancient civilizations domesticated certain animals, they also endowed them with mythical powers. In those days, a walk through the forest, jungle, or desert entailed animal encounters fraught with meaning and even awe.

Only the second animal to be domesticated (the dog was first), the goat took center stage in many myths, most notably the Greeks’. The debauched goat god Pan presided over a group of fauns, creatures that were half-goat, half-man, and Amalthea, the goat that nursed Zeus, gave the king of the gods her horn (the Cornucopia) and fleece (the Aegis). Goats came to represent lustiness, while hares represented lust’s productive offshoot, fertility; in fact, some ancient cultures believed that a great hare lived on the moon, creating a substance that perpetuated the life cycle. Meanwhile, animals like lions, leopards, and horses drew the gods’ chariots as well as symbolized loyalty.

Despite many agreements between disparate cultures regarding animal attributes, plenty of beasts’ traits radically differ from one mythology to another. For instance, owls signify wisdom and prophecy in most Western myths, while being feared as omens of death, disease, and crime in Eastern ones. Snakes, too, reveal a mythological complexity that Judeo-Christian society seldom grants them. Worshiped as symbols of eternity and renewal, snakes once guarded temples and functioned as pets for the Greeks and Romans. One animal that almost every mythology condemns, though, is the pig, associated with greed even during Buddha’s time, when the Enlightened One cited it as an example of our desire to wallow in illusion.

Phoenix Bird

Mythology has always been a subject of interest and excitement for human beings. One of the most important characteristics of mythology are the colorful and interesting characters that are thrown towards the readers. Of course, most of the characters are exaggerated, but then, we have no proof that such characters did not exist or did not have the virtues and characterizations that are said to be theirs. The phoenix bird is one such mythical creature that has garnered the interest of generations of humans.

Phoenix Bird Legend and Physical Description:

The Phoenix Bird myth is in itself exciting and racy. Different legend has it that the phoenix bird lives for about 500 or 1461 years and then builds a nest for itself. The nest is made up of cinnamon twigs. The bird then ignites the nest and itself. The myth so says that a new bird comes out of the ashes of the burnt bird. This bird is destined to live as long as the previous bird. According to some myths, the new Phoenix bird creates an egg out of the ashes of the old Phoenix and stores it in the City of Heliopolis in Egypt.

This myth is routinely used to put an emphasis on afterlife, survival and strength in modern culture and literature. According to other legends, the Phoenix bird also has regenerating capabilities, which makes it almost immortal. It is also the symbol of fire and divinity.

Various legends have a different description of the Phoenix bird. Some legends say that it had a gold and red plumage, while other legends, like the Greeks and the Romans pictured like more on the lines of the eagle or the peacock. The Egyptians described the phoenix bird as a heron or a stork.

Phoenix in Contemporary Usage:

Due to the legend attached to the Phoenix bird, it makes for a good example for anything to with survival, strength, patience, and to a large extent, even victory in popular culture. It has been an important character in many modern and ancient legends. In the US, it is prominently seen on the flag of County and City of San Francisco. It is also seen in the flag and seal of the City of Atlanta.

Phoenix in Media:

Probably, the most famous and successful corroboration of the Phoenix legend has been in the fictional Marvel Comics character Phoenix. The Phoenix has been used in other mainstream media like a spacecraft in the Startrek universe. A sci-fi series titled the ‘Phoenix’ had a short run in the ‘80s. In literature, the Phoenix has played an important part in character creation. It served as a title for a 2000 novel about aircraft crash survivors. Another fantasy novel, titled ‘The Phoenix’ was written by Steven Brust for his Vlad Tatos series in 1990.

Lizard-man's genetic mix of man and dinosaur?

Lizard Man is a creature that is believed to have lived in the swamps of Scape Ore (South Carolina). Is high, with over two meters, has two feet (with three fingers each), strong muscles, three-fingered hands, nails orange and black and shining eyes. He was often seen in summer 1988. It is known that man-lizard attack machine, and kill pets and cattle. There were even reported threats to people.

In West Deena Budd's work - "Guide cryptozoologists, in the chapter entitled" Man of Scape Ore lizard, South Carolina, states:

"In 1982, a scientific paper published by Dr. Dale A. Russell paleontologiştii and Dr. R. Seguin, the National Museum of Natural Sciences in Ottawa. Scientists have proposed a theory that dinosaurs did not disappear completely, and in their place have developed human beings "dinozariene" and bipedal, had three fingers on each hand. "

Thus, the model built by the two scientists like amazingly well with the man-lizard seen Scape Ore!

Mystery beast of Gevaudan wolf or a werewolf?

In one day in January 1764, in Gevaudan forest located in the southwest region of France, a young woman who had brought the cows to pasture in the way he met a fierce beast, which rushed over her. The beast, which was the size of a cattle or a donkey, like a giant wolf. Frightened, the dogs were given on fumes but courageous cattle were driven beast împungând it with horns. This woman was more fortunate than her sisters and they subsequently met the creature was to be known as "the beast of Gevaudan."
Not long after, news began circulating that the mutilated bodies were found some shepherds - men, women and especially children - scattered in the area. The first victim apparently was a little girl, discovered in July, his heart torn from her chest. After a time, other bodies of men were found in late August or early September, fearless creature attacking groups of people. Terrified peasants were sure that a loup-tourniquet (a werewolf) haunting in their land. Rumors have got land when many people stray, who claimed that the creature trăseseră gun or that spintecaseră, argued that it seemed almost invulnerable to human weapons. On 8 October, after two hunters were downloaded in full rifles from a distance of ten feet, the beast ran away limping. The news spread and, briefly, thought she had retired to give his spirit, but after a day or two she started to kill again.
Paris Gazette outlined, based on statements made by witnesses, a portrait of the beast. "She was much taller than a wolf and have sharp claws. The hair was red, his head was high and resembled the nose of a greyhound, ears were small and sharp, broad chest and was gray with black stripes on his back, nose was large, equipped with sharp teeth. " On June 6, 1765, St. James' s Chronicle, an English magazine, observed: "It seems that this is not a wolf, tiger or hyena, but a mongrel beast of the last two mentioned, which gave rise to new species .
After an attack on two children, killed and torn apart in front of other older youth, who vainly attempted to destroy the beast with pitchforks and scythes, a complaint was lodged at the royal court of Versailles. King Louis XV sent a detachment of light cavalry under the command of Captain Duhamel, in the region. Duhamel has put more soldiers to wear women's clothes, on the theory that the animal was attracted to women. Hunters discovered the beast several times and opened fire on them, but she always managed to escape. After the carnage seemed to have ceased to believe that the beast Duhamel died of wounds received. But once he and his dragons retreated, to kill the beast resumed.
Establish a big prize in the region has attracted professional hunters and soldiers. They were killed over a hundred wolves, but the beast continued its aggressions. Several hunters, including one specializing in hunting of wolves - which had been sent from the personal command of the king - announced they were seriously wounded beast, but it seemed nothing can stop her. In the summer of 1765, massacre of children was particularly ferocious.
Months passed and during that entire villages were left deserted. Farmers have abandoned their homes, claiming to have spotted the beast while he watched through the window. Those who have dared to venture out on the street were attacked. The peasants were afraid even dare to pull the beast offered a safe target.
In June 1767, events reached its climax. Marquis d'APCHER, who lived in the western part of the Gevaudan region, drew hundreds of hunters and other specialists who have spread into small groups. On the night of 19, the beast attacked a group. Jean CHASTEL, which - prudent - he loaded the gun with silver bullets, assuming they could have to do with a loup-tourniquet, shot twice in the beast. The second bullet hit her right in the heart, killing her. When he was cut in the stomach of a young girl was discovered collarbone. Before being shot down, the beast had killed 60 people. The state spent more than 29,000 pounds, a fortune for those days, in an effort to come HAC killer beast.
Monstrous corpse was walked across the region over the next two weeks, then was packed to be sent to Versailles. Meanwhile housing began to rot, why was not sent to the Royal Court, but was buried somewhere in the countryside.
Although the story seems a horror scenario, there is no doubt that it really happened. Many famous naturalist believes that stories about the attacks made by wolves against humans (if the beast was attacking a wolf, as modern historians assume) are very suspicious, what Roger A. Caras cause it to argue that "many of them are exaggerated" . However, despite the myths and exaggerations, there is apparently widespread and credible reports about ravenous wolves, especially before the advent of firearms. In a study on the relationship between wolves attacking humans and its legends werewolves, WMS Russell and Claire had said that "modern wolves probably have more experience behind them generations of ancestors who had to deal with weapons Fire. "
It is, on the one hand, an extraordinary event in the annals of animal behavior. On the other hand, the mere size of the transfer problem in criptozoologiei beings. This episode raises many questions that it is doubtful that they will give answers to two centuries after it happened.

Onza, the mysterious cat in the world

Onza mysterious cat is the most famous in Mexico as he says - lives in the western chain of mountains Sierra Madea. Zoologists are still bound to give him formal recognition, yet its existence seem to be beyond doubt.
Feline-looking wolf
Onza Aztecs (or cuitlamiztli, as she called it) was an animal distinct from two other feline, puma and jaguar, which shared environment. After the arrival of Spanish conquerors, they asked the king to show his great Montezuma zoo. In this garden, see Bernal Diaz del Castilio be found "tiger [jaguar] and lions [Puma] two ways, one of which resembles the wolf."
Cat attacking people gulp
Spanish immigrants who later settled in northwestern Mexico have noted the presence of a feline in the wild wolf-looking - with long ears, body lean and long and thin with long legs and they named it onza, after the Latin uncia, referring to the quote from Asia or Africa. They also noted the ferocity of the beast. Jgnaz Father Pfefferkorn, a Jesuit missionary set in Sonora, wrote in 1757: "She's not shy [panther], and whoever dares to attack, you must be very careful." Father Johann Baegert, who lived with Indians Guaricura in Baja California, in the middle of the eighteenth century, says: "A onza dared to break into my neighbor's mission that I was visiting. The beast attacked a 14-year-old boy in broad daylight, almost in sight of all. And a few years ago such a beast killed the most powerful and respected soldier in the region. "
The expedition in which he caught a onza
In addition to its area, onza is almost unknown. Sporadic references about her were impressed by anybody, and zoologists have continued to assume that there lived only puma and jaguar. There has been no organized scientific expedition to explore the serious wild with her land in many places inaccessible even for horses, in order to elucidate the problem. Only after 1930, two experienced guides who were involved in hunting in the mountains - Dale and Clell Lee - have first heard about onza when they were in the mountains of Sonora. In time, they moved their operational scope Sinaloa, 500 miles to the south. They accompanied him Joseph H. Shirk, banker originally from Indiana, who wanted to hunt jaguars in the mountains rich in wild game of all kinds. Here they killed a cat and realized immediately that it was a puma. Actually looks exactly like a native onza which claimed that dwells in the region. Once you have it photographed and measured the animal slaughtered, Shirk and keeping skin and skull. Nobody knows where they are now the trophies.

Convinced that they had stumbled across something important of the two guides described the American zoologists beast that had killed and were surprised that their stories have been circulated among scientists. These accounts have been taken but the press ridiculed the story. Conservative and suspicious by nature, are unusual to question the word, the two brothers Dale and Clell Lee withdrew in themselves and have never discussed the chance that participated. They were silent until 1950, when Robert Marshall as Arizona State, became friends with Dale Lee - in sympathy - stories recorded statements. Marshall then went to Mexico and even conducted research in the field and recorded their results in a book entitled Onza, published in 1961, except for a single review (bad) made a scientific journal, has not enjoyed to no attention.
Criptozoologii analyze onza
In 1982, the meeting of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C, was established by the International Society cryptozoologists (SI C). For the first time scientists and biologists in general and in particular had a body that could investigate problems with the animals unknown, unrecognized or controversial. Criptozoologii were among the few residents of northwest Mexico who heard the onza.
J. Richard Greenwell, secretary and C, who lived in Tucson, found that Robert Marshall lived in the same city, was casual in the same locality and Dale Lee. Marshall holds a skull and gave onza Greenwell mold top row of teeth. Greenwell, in turn, showed the mold of a West German specialist in mammals, Helmut Hemmer, who had advanced the idea that the animal was called onza prehistoric relic cite some species of North America (Arcinonyx Truman). This event but was eliminated after comparing the skulls, but the mere fact that the end is engendered a discussion on this theme was an indication that onza will eventually get the attention they deserve.
Running after skulls onza
Parallel efforts neîncununate success, to pick out "Shirk skull, which had disappeared long ago, Marshall Greenwell, and have coordinated their efforts with two specialists in mammals, and Bert E. Troy Cockrum Lendell the University of New Mexico University of Arizona respectively. Through Cockrum they had met in Sinaloa, the state of New Mexico, the forester Ricardo Urquijo jr. which was in possession of an intact skull onza forester killed by another, Jesus Vega, in the same area where two other skulls were obtained onza. Meanwhile, Best, a leading authority on mountain lion skulls, discovered another skull onza the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
Hunting a onza 1986
On the night of January 1, 1986, at 22.30, two deer hunters in the district of San Ignacio in the land Silano, shot a large beast. It was clear that the beast was not shot down a jaguar, and the hunters had no idea what could be. They have noted that two months ago gringo (Greenwell and Marshall) strongly evident interest in a strange beast in a discussion with a ranger friend had alerted him and Manuel Vega. This, as he saw the slain beast has admitted he was a onza. Vega's father once hunted a onza.
Urquijo With rich families (one of its members had lent them Cockrum's "skull Vega) corpse was preserved in a freezer fishing companies Mazatlan private, then announced Greenwell. Greenwell and Best were photographed and carcass dissection proceeded to the Regional Diagnostic Laboratory and Animal Pathology, an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico. Greenwell wrote:
Description of a ONZE
"After I researched, I found that cat, a female, much like the descriptions made by the local population. He had a very graceful body with long legs, slender and long tail. The ears were too long for a puma (about 100 mm). In the inside of the front legs have been discovered some bands that, as far as is known so far, there is the puma. Mothers had well-developed and that age was at least four years. Weighed about 27 pounds. (Before being frozen probably weighed more), compared with the adult female cougar, which weighs between 36 and 60 kg. Its length - 186 cm - is comparable to female cougar, which measures between 150 and 233 cm. Yet tail, which measure 73 cm, was very long compared to the puma tail female, measuring 53 cm to 81 cm. "
Different organ and tissue samples were sent to the U.S. for analysis. Unfortunately, in the years that followed were intended Greenwell and Best assiduously problems, relying on the lack of time and most important concerns. A preliminary comparison of tissue samples taken from the cougar and onza, conducted at Texas Technical University, showed great similarities and differences insignificant. But analysts have prepared a technical report. In any case, can not draw a conclusion after a single test animal since different species often are very close genetically.
Conclusion uncertain: a new species or a local genetic freak?
The samples, kept frozen below will still be studied with great firmness before scientists can decide whether the animal is a new species or just a local genetic freak. Existing evidence until now to make plausible likelihood that the beginning and it's unfortunate that the issue is stalled in mid-1992.
According to a report in 1986, rangers were able to capture alive a onza in northern Sonora, on the border with Arizona. They kept alive a few days, seeking to capture the interest of the authorities to investigate. Finally, seeing that no one interested in hunters who killed the beast seized her and threw her corpse in a dry river bed.

Monster from a lake in Canada

Barbara Malloy, a resident of Newport, Canada, said he saw a monster in a lake, named Memphremagog. Like Nessie of Loch Ness, Scotland, or Champ from Lake Champlain, Memphremagog is hero to local legend.
It is the first appearance of the creature because there are numerous testimonies about its existence in the great Canadian lake. Sightings dating back to 1840. A local newspaper, The Stanstead Journal reported the occurrence of something big and winding around the lake in the 1840s. On 21 January 1847 a witness said: "I'm not the best person to tell about strange animal nature, the unknown, which resembles a snake and lives in Lake Memphremagog." But the monster was known long before. According to stories in the past, American Indians said that the first Europeans arrived there was something in the lake.
Ms. Malloy first sighting in 1983 in the island waters and then in Northern Horseneck. It is assumed that look somewhat like a plesiosaurs, a water dinosaur Jurassic period, brown or black, with four spade-shaped fins, with an elongated and rounded body and long neck. It seemed long for about 15 to 20 meters. Popular designs or handicrafts that it is the animal skin turns green, but it usually depends on the witness. This time Mrs. Malloy said he saw a black wave, which raise and lower the water, then disappeared. She said she and another resident of Newport has confirmed the occurrence, only that she saw a big back like a mound rising from the water but did not want to announce publicly visible.
In time, others have come to add new reports about the appearance of the monster. Jacques Boisvert, a noted local diver and historian, has collected a lot of these mysterious tales collected throughout the lake. A monk at the monastery of Saint Benoit near Lake Memphremagog dracontologie proposed deadline for the work done by Boisvert. Dracontologia, the English version, is a branch of criptozoologiei, for all sorts of mysterious and legendary creatures.

Giant creatures are real?

Testimonials about the Yeti's existence, the crocodiles in Russia or give huge octopus cryptozoologists work worldwide. Incredibly, in the last century, have been found alive and unharmed, the lives that were supposed to have disappeared thousands of years ago.
Criptozoologiei father was Dr. Bernard Heuvelmans, who also proposed the term in 1955 with the publication of his book "On the trail of unknown animals." How those interested in his theories have been numerous since 1982, Heuvelmans began to publish the magazine "cryptozoologists", defining the term that science which deals with the study of animals that are not officially recognized by experts in zoology but supported in some way due to the numerous testimonies of those who have met such creatures. Kryptos term derives from the Greek word, meaning unknown, secret, enigmatic, mysterious.
Over the centuries, many species of animals have disappeared as a result of ecological imbalance created by the development of human society or direct attempts to exterminate the species problem. An example is the Thylacine or Tasmanian tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus). In the early twentieth century, this carnivorous marsupial that lived in Australia has been hunted to extinction. The last known specimen died in captivity in 1936 in Hobart Zoo, Australia. Numerous testimonies of his appearance, made even today, shows however that there could be a few copies still living in the wild.
Cryptozoologists come and support the idea that many of these mysterious animals are actually survivors from ancient times. For example, for hundreds of years there have been stories about dinosaurs that survived in the jungles of Central Africa. The earliest written record we find a book in 1776, the Abbe Proyhart claims that he saw traces of an animal with huge claws in western Central Africa. According to the same ideas, sea monsters would actually plesiosaurs (prehistoric aquatic reptile) and Yeti - Gigantopitecus black, which apes a supposedly extinct a few hundred thousand years.
Ancient giant lizards may have existed in Russia until a few centuries ago. A mysterious being (as one resembling a crocodile with a dinosaur after another) occurred in the city of Arzamas in the early eighteenth century. Authorities have kept the monster in a jar filled with "strong wine" (another name for vodka) and sent him to St. Petersburg to study. Men who accompanied the cargo to the city seems to have drunk alcohol in the flask, and lizard-relic, perhaps the last of its species, was used as a snack. Coat of arms of Moscow, which is St. George the Trophy-bearer portrayed with a spear penetrating a snake, is also a source for cryptozoologists. Few know that this snake was real beings who at one time inhabited the forests of Russia. With them struggling voinicii of Russian stories and legends. It seems that the old knights sword sealed their disappearance from earth of these prehistoric lizards.
Crocodiles Novgorod
Crocodile-gigantNu only remember the legends and stories enigmatic monsters. There are other sources which mention the truly extraordinary creatures. Who opens the 30th volume of "Compendium of Russian annals, will find an amazing note, dated 1582:" That summer they went from bad crocodiles and they scared people. They prayed to God to save them trouble. Some have managed to hide, but others have been killed by monsters. " What are these crocodiles that have come from bad and rushed over to people? This happened not far-off Africa, but in the near Novgorod. It may be that the Chronicle to be exaggerated to some extent? Notes of an agent of a British commercial companies named Jerome Garcey Fri strange but evidence in support.
In 1589, he traveled to Britain several times in Russia. On the road to the east, Poland has witnessed an unprecedented fact. In his diary was preserved following note: "I left Warsaw in the evening, we crossed an evil, which was situated on the banks causing a crocodile, dead. People in my entourage and stomach were pierced with spears. As a consequence, also spread a smell, that I was poisoned and I was admitted to a hospital in the village near where I found compassion and Christian Aid, so I recovered pretty quickly. "
Austrian testimony about strange lizards
Lizards strange, uncharacteristic for the Russian fauna is also found in memories of Austrian soil in Russia, Gerbershtein Sigismund, who traveled to these places in the years 1517 and 1526. Here are his words: "The region is very rich in forests that may see the terrible events. Here, and today many people still alive who worship idols and eat the kind of snakes that have four short legs, like lizards and a black body and fat .... "
The monsters who drink blood
varanChiar where many thought-provoking stories dealing with such sources with suspicion. Thus researchers tried at one time and the story of a pilot who has suffered damage to his machine on the island of Java Komodo archipelago. Pilot accident happens in 1912. Returning from his trip, he began to recount the incredible things about monsters who drink blood. Only in the summer of 1926, an expedition arrived on the island of zoologists who have studied the relics of giant lizards, called her on the island of Komodo dragons. These prehistoric animals whose number was not higher than 1000 reached 4.5 meters in length and weighed about 170 pounds. Varanii giant were pretty aggressive, attacking without hesitation stately animals. A German hunter, famous at the time, died expedition to Komodo, the circumstances remain unclear. He went to photograph a group of VARAN and never returned. On the banks of marshes were only found his shoes and camera to photograph destroyed.
A pound slug
The official documents that currently the international community unites cryptozoologists about 50 researchers from 20 countries. Based on legends and myths, they are dealing with animals looking enigmatic and incomprehensible phenomena of nature study of life. For them, this is not a race for sensational, but a serious scientific activity. The road was littered with many failures, but also with enough wins. One of them is the famous story of a snail that weighed a pound. Researchers have learned about him from the stories of blacks in Central Africa, where they found some huge shells. A live specimen was discovered quite by chance through some logs transported to Marseille. Giant snail was walked triumphantly through Paris, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Berlin or London. Among the great coral reef in Australia recently caught criptozoologii eight new types of exotic fish, the existence of which no one knew anything.
Giant octopus
In the sands of Arabia was caught a 120-inch lizard, VARAN Asian ancestor. Referred to in ancient Arabic legend, the lizard was searched tirelessly for 25 years. Giant mollusc is invoked whenever someone takes criptozoologiei futility. These strange animals that haunt the depths of the ocean can reach impressive sizes. Recent estimates show that a giant octopus can reach 20-22 feet. Although no specimen was not seen in adult life researchers, who took some time before the testimonies of those who had met with laughter as monsters, some specimens were caught near New Zealand couples. Scientists plans include the introduction of such young specimens huge aquariums and studying their growth process.
Recently found evidence of a species even more impressive than the giant octopus. Mesonychoteuthis Hamilton has been described in detail due to the latest discovery of a truly massive specimen. Researchers have yet managed to establish this new species of octopus lives in Antarctic waters and can reach truly impressive size, much larger than the giant octopus.
Animals illusory
Meetings with hairy hominids such as Yeti, Sasquatch or Nguoi Rung mentioned since antiquity. The proof of the existence of this creature known estrous famous Roger Patterson film, dating from 1967. Assumptions talk meetings with extinct apes. It is assumed that an animal could be Gigantopithecus also black, which apes a supposedly extinct a few hundred thousand years. Story mountain gorilla discovery demonstrates that such species may remain undetected and that the good folk legends decades about such creatures can have a real basis. The same is true for giant panda. It took 67 years from the time when Westerners were "discovered" this animal to capture a copy. During this period, 12 well-prepared expeditions failed to obtain even a picture of a cat. It took 20 years to capture a specimen of the parrot in the Congo. Until then, it was known only from the testimony of scientists and local description.
Explanations for sea monsters
Another type of animals that were born many controversies are so-called sea monsters. The most famous such copy shall be presumed that it was in Loch Ness in Scotland. Many of the existing testimonies can be explained in part by some lesser-known climatic phenomena that determine the strange form of waves. Another explanation, valid for lakes connected with the sea, would be the emergence of a sturgeon. Its appearance would certainly inflame the imagination of many. Thus, instead of scales, the Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrhynchus) is covered with five rows of bony plates. Smaller sturgeons swim through rivers to lakes that are related to the ocean, such as Lake Champlain in Vermont, USA. Once there, sturgeon can grow to impressive size. Thus, the Atlantic sturgeon reach over 5 feet long and can weigh over 400 pounds. In 1951, a fisherman says out loud that he saw a monster in Lake Champlain. He fired several bullets in the right strange animal, and he disappeared. A few days later, wearing the body of a giant sturgeon after a bullet was brought on shore. The largest sturgeon ever measured is but a specimen of Acipenser huso, caught in the Volga River in 1827. Fish will measure 8 feet and weighing 1,470 pounds.
Surprise: primitive fish disappeared 80 million years
Sometimes, animals are assumed to have disappeared long ago in prove life. Coelacanth's (primitive fish) is the best example. In 1938, a coelacanth was caught by fishermen Nerín boat near the river mouth in South Africa Chalumna. Fish measuring about 2 feet and weighed over 60 pounds. Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer, the Museum of London, could not identify, so he sent a drawing of Professor JLB Smith of Rhodes University in South Africa. Only it is determined that a coelacanth. Before this startling discovery, researchers believed extinct over 80 million years ago. The next specimen was caught only in 1952. Since then, over 200 of these fish were caught around the Comoro Islands. Another recent example is the Canary Island lizard Gallotia gomerana. In June 1999, told the Spanish researchers have found six specimens of this species in the island of La Gomera. Gallotia gomerana, lizard more than half a meter long, was considered extinct about 500 years. In 1997 he discovered a giant tree rat in Vilcabamba Mountains in Peru. The discovery, Louise Emmons of the Smithsonian Institute, called Cuscomys ashaninka animal, after the city of Cuzco was found near the native place names, Ashaninka
